Week 1 at Eastie!

Hi everyone!

Week 1 with the Fall SEAD Intern is in the books! It feels like I've been here forever and my first day at the same time. I'm looking forward to the next 9 weeks of growth with you all!

Here's a recap of my first week:

  • Meetings with individual students to get to know each other, talk about academics, the college application process, and career interests. We filled out the SEAD 7 Character Aspirations checklist, the Academic Self Assessment, and signed Behavior Contracts.
  • Sitting in on classes: I've learned new things about environmental science, Into the Wild, chemistry, and more this week! I love this chance to travel back in time to my high school days and watch the SEAD scholars in action.
  • Out of school bonding with the students - more to look forward to this weekend, but it's been great to grab meals with some students outside of school. Please reach out to hang out!
  • Our first group meeting! These group meetings with all 8 SEAD scholars at East Boston High School will be happening every Wednesday during first lunch. We will be checking in with each over and covering our College Knowledge curriculum for the week...these meetings are so important to be at and I expect everyone to be there every week.
Things to keep on your radar:
  • Group event THIS Sunday: We will be meeting at 3pm at Airport Station to take the T to Revere Beach, a few stops outbound on the Blue line and the first public beach in America. We will relax, have some snacks, grab ice cream, and be back in Eastie around 5:30/6, if not earlier. Let's pretend it's still summer (sunny and 85 forecast for Sunday!) and relax at the beach!
  • By next week's group meeting on Wednesday, I will have a tentative calendar of SEAD events that are happening this term, so you can plan ahead!
  • Keep doing your WilsonPrep exercises. Practice, practice, practice is key to the SAT, and you don't want to get kicked out of our access to WilsonPrep! Please reach out if you are having any trouble with internet access or with completing the exercises.
For Parents and Guardians:

It has been a joy to meet your student this week and I'm looking forward to developing a relationship with them over these 9 weeks. Each and every one has shown themselves to be polite, curious, and respectful.

You should have received a letter in the mail sometime late this week (or maybe it will take until Monday, at the latest). I will be following up with a phone call soon. There will also be a SEAD Parent/Scholar dinner coming up later this fall, which you will be getting a date and time for soon.

SEAD Shoutout of the week: Every week I will be doing a SEAD Shoutout (or a few) to call out someone who did something great this week. This week's shoutout goes to Ke'Andre! Ke'Andre helped clean up plates and pizza leftover from our weekly group meeting without being asked.

Already feeling like home! The view from the East Boston Public Library one night last week - I'm enjoying exploring the vibrant community and East Boston - especially the beautiful greenway and great food!

As always, feel free to reach out and contact me at any time for any reason. I'm here for you!

Have a great weekend!

Maggie

Meet this Fall's SEAD Intern!

Hi SEAD family!

My name is Maggie Finn and I am the SEAD intern at East Boston High School this fall. I’m very excited to be in East Boston and can’t wait to get to know you, the school, and East Boston better.

This fall, I will be posting on this new blog about what the SEAD students and I are up to. Make sure to check back (SEADebhs.blogspot.com) to keep updated.

I will be at East Boston until November 21 and am so excited to get to know the students better over the next 10 weeks, work with them on their schoolwork and help them prep for the upcoming college application process.

Here's a little information to let you know more about me:
  • Major: History major with an Education minor
  • Class year: Junior (just like the SEAD students!)
  • Career interests: teaching, education policy
  • Activities on campus: Club Swim Team, Students for Education Reform, hiking club, Alpha Xi Delta sorority
  • Interests: cooking, baking, art, reading, swimming
  • Favorite food: all desserts...I have a major sweet tooth!
Students, I hope you'll drop by my office early and often! Parents, please feel free to contact me at anytime! The students will have my contact information and it will be mailed home in a letter soon.

Excited for the next 10 weeks!

See you soon,
Maggie
