SEAD trip to the Harvard Art Museums and Harvard Square

On Friday after school, Ronaldo, Alex and I headed to the Harvard Art Museums. It was great to see the different exhibits they had available. There were pieces from various time periods and from all over the world. Ronaldo and Alex were very engaged with the artwork and really enjoyed seeing the variety of pieces. I especially enjoyed the modern art pieces. It was great to see physical object incorporated into the art pieces. I also connected with the pieces focusing on social justice. I love the way art can portray social issues and really make one think about the piece. After the museums, we headed to Harvard Square where we found a small American diner to have get a bite of food. Overall, the trip was a success!

Alex excited to begin looking at the exhibits!

Alex inspecting an art piece of an artist painting his self portrait.

Ronaldo reading about a painting of a celebration.

Alex and Ronaldo concentrated on taking in every piece!

This is made entirely of wood!

A piece I especially enjoyed. The eyes really draw you in.

The view from the second floor of the museum.

We were all very interested in the architecture of the building itself!

Week 3's SEAD Shoutout goes to Jakara!

Jakara has been working very hard this last week to turn in all missing work before the end of the semester. She has also been very proactive by getting in contact with her teachers about how she can improve in their classes.  I love the dedication she is showing to her school work!

Week 2's SEAD Shoutout goes to Pam!

Pam stayed positive throughout Reunion even though she experienced some stressful computer problems. She was on task during every study hall and completed all her homework! Keep up the good work Pam!!

Reunion Weekend Recap

This past weekend SEAD students from our four partner high schools returned to Dartmouth for 3 days of fun-filled activities. While in Hanover, our students had the pleasure of staying with local host families and hanging out with current and past SEAD staff! Along with some much-needed catch up time, SEAD students participated in a variety of workshops on the college search process, financial aid, and mental health. They also had the great opportunity to take part in a discussion lead by Rev. Starsky Wilson, the co-chair of the Ferguson Commission. Overall, I think the reunion was a success! Students are looking forward to SEAD III this summer.

Meet this Winter's SEAD Intern, Mrynna!

Hi SEAD family!

My name is Mrynna Cervantes and I am the SEAD Winter Intern at East Boston High School. I am so excited to meet all the students and their families. I hope that over my ten weeks at EBHS I am able to support you as best as I can, both academically and personally. I will be at school starting this Friday, Jan 9th! I look forward to being available for schoolwork help, college search advice, or just a friendly chat!

So that you have a better idea of who I am, here is a little info!
I grew up in El Centro, CA, a small farming community in the California desert about 10 miles from the Mexican border. I attended a high school that has various similarities to EBHS. It will be interesting for me to see in exactly what areas the two differ and overlap. I am currently a junior at Dartmouth, with a major in government and a minor in education. My future plans are constantly changing, but for now I see myself going into teaching for a few years after graduation. I hope to then attend graduate school to earn a master’s or PHD in ethnic studies curriculum. The end goal for me would be working at a non-profit type of organization that was devoted to spreading and implementing an ethnic studies curriculum across schools.
As a way to de-stress, I must admit I am an avid TV watcher. It is a little embarrassing at times, but the list of shows I keep up with only grows after each break I get from school. If you love a TV show, please let me know! I would love to either gush over it with you or put it on my “must watch” list. I have recently become interested in knitting, which I have a feeling will come in handy during this cold Northeast winter. I also love to read, especially books by authors like Jodi Picoult, Sarah Dessen, and John Green. My tastes air more to the side of “young adult” novels; they’re so entertaining!

Students, I hope to learn about your interests and background too over the next 10 weeks!
Parents, please feel free to reach out to me at anytime!

See you soon,

Mrynna
